To Grandmother’s house we go, and oh no her coffee maker is from the 70’s! Chances are you’ll find yourself without your favorite coffee accessories over the holidays. So we’ve got some great coffee hacks to ensure you still get the perfect cup every day. Folgers be damned!
Coffee Hack #1: Shake things up
If you are using a blade grinder, use a little more coffee than typically recommended and gently shake the grinder while you pulse. Using more coffee will help compensate for the uneven grind sizes and shaking the grinder will help the coffee move around and grind more evenly.
Coffee Hack #2: No pourover? No problem.
That Mr. Coffee maker is going on 10 years of use, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a decent cup. These tips will help turn it into a pour over coffee maker fit for MacGyver.
1.First step, unplug it! That’s right. Automatic drip machines are better when they aren’t plugged in. The heating element isn’t getting that water hot enough for brewing anyway and the hot plate that the carafe is sitting on will only make the resulting brew nasty and bitter.
2. Since the machine won’t be plugged in, that leaves the brewing to us. Lift up the top of the brewer so that the filter basket is easily accessible.
3. Pre-measure how much coffee and water you will need for brewing. We recommend 2 – 3 Tablespoons of coffee per 8 ounces of water. Add your measured water to any stovetop kettle you have and wait for it to come to a boil. While you’re waiting for your water to boil, grind the coffee.
4. Add your medium ground coffee to the filter and pour a few ounces of water on top of the grounds to get the party started. Let it soak for 30 seconds or so and then continue to pour the rest of your water over the grounds. This should take just a couple of minutes.
• Now it’s time to enjoy! Pour yourself and the fam some awesome coffee.
